«The Sphinx» Rock Formation at Burabay national park in Akmola Oblast

Between June 15 and July 15 Kazakhstan will take part in local round of annual international photographic competition «Wiki Loves Earth» (WLE).

Competition is aimed at documenting of natural heritage sites and is held in 2 rounds: first, from May to July, all participating countries make their own competition, and in the end choose 10 (sometimes up to 15) best pictures, that are sent to international round. Photographs are uploaded through special lists, made by organizers in each country and based on local lists of natural heritage sites.

37 countries take part in the 2022 competition, and it's not the first time for the most of them. But for Kazakhstan it is. At the same time the competition founder and one of the most active participants, Ukraine, will not participate this year, and Russia, that participated just a bit less then Ukraine (Russian pictures even won the international round in 2017, 2018 and 2021) will hold only local round and isn't planning to submit its winners to the international one. It's all happens mostly because of ongoing armed conflict between two.

Russian Wikivoyage community that organizes this competition in Russia traditionally, also made lists of natural heritage sites for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan this year, so User Group of Wikimedians of Kazakh language representatives decided to accept this helpful act and to organize WLE in their country, hoping both to help local Wikimedia community to develop itself and to enlarge database of free images of local natural heritage sites.

Contest page, lists of natural heritage sites and all additional pages will be presented in 3 languages: English, Russian and Kazakh, that should make participation easy both for locals and tourists. Also there will be prizes for local round winners, so organizers are preparing Rapid Grant request to Wikimedia Foundation to cover it.
