On September 18, 2024, at 13:29 UTC the Russian Wikipedia for the first time in history recorded two million articles. A contributor Pessimist2006 wrote about this in a new thread on the Russian Wikipedia users' forum, which is part of the wiki alongside the main, encyclopedic content. Contributor and administrator Insider created a new version of the website logo to celebrate the achievement. The logo is the Wikipedia unfinished puzzle globe in golden color and with a banner containing the number "2 000 000" in front of it. As of September 24, the Russian Wikipedia's home page reports 2000853 articles.
On 14 August, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), due to its potential for wider transmission of mpox (monkeypox). Since mpox – an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus – can be particularly severe in children and pregnant women, United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) agreed with WHO: on 31 August UNICEF issued emergency tender to secure mpox vaccines for crisis-hit countries.
Annual conference of Wikipedians (Wikimedians) of Central and Eastern Europe — Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2023 — was held in Tbilisi. The organizer was the Georgian user group. The conference venue was Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, the oldest in the country. At the conference, Wikimedia Foudation's “Universal Code of Conduct”, “Youth Safety Policy” and “Data privacy policy” were in force.
Between June 15 and July 15 Kazakhstan will take part in local round of annual international photographic competition «Wiki Loves Earth» (WLE). Competition is aimed at documenting of natural heritage sites and is held in 2 rounds: first, from May to July, all participating countries make their own competition, and in the end choose 10 (sometimes up to 15) best pictures, that are sent to international round.
On February 7, 2022, a contest for writing and editing articles «The World of Universities» dedicated to higher education institutions started in the Russian and English sections of Wikipedia. The contest is part of a project that the Russian non-profit partnership «Wikimedia RU» is implementing with the support of the non-governmental development institute «Innopraktika» and the Presidential Grants Fund.
The newly formed organization is the face of the Wikimedia Foundation's affiliation "Wikimedia Community of Saint Petersburg User Group", recognized by the Affiliation Committee (AffCom).
On September 18, 2024, the Crimean Republican Universal Scientific Library named after Ivan Franko, located in the center of Simferopol, hosted a creative evening A pen, a notebook, an empty pocket and... all the continents in the palm of hand, where a self-study book was presented, intended for travelers who are able to think creatively and literary display what they saw.
North-West Russia Wiki-Historians organised another wiki-expedition using automobile and Gdov became the target. Gdov is the ancient Russian town that was very important military and economical center of lake Peipus nearby in the past.
Wikimedia Foundation has disabled one of the main functionality again Russian Wikinews due to well-known technical specialists of a critical problem that they have not solved for almost a year. Another shutdown followed a global failure in the Foundation’s infrastructure, which lasted for about 20 minutes.
n March 2021 Wikimedia movement members from the User Group called North-West Russia Wiki-Historians User Group (NWR-Hist) accomplished another Wiki Expedition foсused on photographing and collecting information for usage in Wikimedia projects.
In the very end of the year 2020 the Wikimedia User Group called "North-West Russia Wiki-Historians" made their another wiki expedition—this time to the Republic of Karelia. Lots of photos were made for Wikimedia Commons and other projects such as Wikipedia, Wikivoyage and Wikinews. Also, an annual summarizing conference was held with distant participants.
UG EZY user group — «Wikimedians of Erzya language User Group» hosted 3-day event that included Wiki Expedition in Vyborg, brainstorming with the soloist of «Oyme» song group and summing up year 2020.
Russia's Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs (русск. Федеральное агентство по делам национальностей, ФАДН/FADN) once again recognized Bashkir Wikipedians with its «The Key Word» (русск. Ключевое слово) Award, invited Wikimedians to report on cooperation with the Republic of Tatarstan institutions during its «Language Policy: Practices from across Russia» (русск. Языковая политика: общероссийская экспертиза) Annual Dialogue Forum.
Tatar language Commission together with Wikimedia Russia and Tatar Wikimedians User Group launched first international wiki-marathon on writing Tatar Wikipedia articles on geography, culture, history and contemporary life of Tatarstan. «My Tatarstan» (тат. Минем Татарстан) contest runs from December 15, 2020 through January 31st, 2021.
