Project background:

Wikinews are not yet active in many languages, whilst setting up free-standing language sections requires energy and competencies to go through related procedural pipeline. At the same time, natives of many languages also speak good Russian and could generate news in own tongues, relying on the support of the Russian Wikinews community. The project is mainly targeting language communities that don't yet have any Wikimedia Foundation supported Wiki. At the same time, news creation in languages which don't yet have own Wikinews is also welcome.

Among other sister Wikis, Wikinews were selected for first introduction of language-community to the Wiki for two reasons:

  1. News is usually of interest to wider population segments than other Wiki projects (such as Wiktionary or Wikipedia).
  2. Russian Wikinews community was ready to help colleagues.
